Serial Experiments Lain is a cyberpunk psychological thriller anime produced by J.C. Staff, aired on Fuji TV in Japan between July 2000 and December 2000. The series follows a young man named Lain who discovers that all of his late father's experiments have awakened the consciousness of every computer terminal connected to the internet. Lain finds himself navigating an online world where countless minds are sharing one another's thoughts while struggling to find out if "If you want to know what is real, don't believe your eyes or what you think." Serial Experiments Lain has garnered an immense cult following for its bizarre mixture of romance, coming-of-age story, mystery, drama and horror elements. The series was released on LaserDisc and DVD in Japan by Pioneer LDC. The Pioneer release contains an English hardsubbed subtitled version that sometimes distorts the picture, the subtitles are present on the whole of the disc with no further language options. It was later released in North America by Geneon with a dub produced by Blue Water Studios. Both subbed and dubbed versions were later distributed in Australia and New Zealand via Madman Entertainment. The series has also been translated into several other European languages, including German, French and Spanish among others. On January 25, 2016, Funimation announced it had acquired all rights for streaming and home video distribution of Serial Experiments Lain from previous license-holder Sentai Filmworks. Funimation made the subtitled version of the series available for streaming on their website on May 4, 2016. In a postmodern twist, Lain's parents are portrayed as virtual reality researchers who operated an "VRMOO" server out of their home. In an attempt to keep their daughter from growing up in a sterile environment, they organized all-night family get-togethers called "therapy sessions". The end results were that Lain grew up isolated from the outside world. Lain has just moved into her new home when she meets wired people in school for the first time in her life. They, too, are her new neighbors, who are being forced to live in the rebuilt district by the government after a disaster. Lain meets Mirai Kuriyama, an eighth grader who is chatting with her friends about the recent death of their nurse. While other kids leave class early because they have "something to do" or simply want to be alone, Lain stays behind and asks her teacher about the death. The teacher replies that it was just a suicide... Later that evening she sees a group of girls in blue jumpers in front of an apartment complex that has a broken roof and people inside desperately searching for help. Lain finds them in the world of The Wired, hanging in cyberspace in The Wired's "Dark City". Lain's consciousness remains separate from the other participants in the discussion, but she is able to request that they take her there to see where they went. She finds them inside a futuristic house which is revealed to be Kiko Psi, an advanced AI system. Kiko tells Lain that she is "the one" who can save everything and says "there are holes." It also explains that it came online when various minds connected to the computer were uploaded into its program, including her parents'. It then uploads itself into Lain's body. She feels pain everywhere and then collapses. cfa1e77820
